Your Instagram footprint just got social!

An image introducing the Instagram new features article

Instagram just dropped one of its boldest updates yet—and it’s got everyone talking.

Let’s be honest—posting on the main feed just isn’t what it used to be. These days, most of us are deep in the Reels rabbit hole, endlessly scrolling through funny clips, life hacks, and oddly satisfying videos.

Instagram’s noticed this shift, and their latest update is clearly trying to turn that passive scrolling into active sharing.

Sharing Reels with friends just got easier

Reposting Reels is now super easy, and it actually makes sense—like when you find a Reel showing a genius hack for making crispy roast potatoes and you have to share it with your foodie friends. Suddenly, you’re swapping tips, tagging each other in recipes, and maybe even planning a dinner party.

The Reels Friends tab – Connecting us or creeping us out?

Instagram’s new Friends tab in Reels shows what your friends have liked, commented on, reposted, or created.

But here’s where it gets a bit awkward. Not every Reel we watch is something we want our mates to know about.

Maybe you’ve been deep in a spiral of funny videos about your boss’ micro-management tendencies, or watching content that’s more personal or reflective.

With the new Friends tab showing what you’ve liked or commented on, it raises the question: are we still in control of our digital footprint, or is Instagram making our private scrolling habits a bit too public?

Feeling a bit exposed?

If you’re feeling a bit exposed by all this new sharing, good news!—Instagram does give you the option.

You can head into your settings and turn off the option to share your activity, such as what Reels you’ve liked or commented on. So if you’d rather keep your Reel-watching habits (including those slightly risky ones about your boss) on the down-low, you’ve got the power to stay private.

But with all this visibility, it’s fair to ask: are we connecting more deeply, or just giving away more of ourselves? Whether you’re loving the new vibe or feeling a bit watched, one thing’s for sure—Instagram’s not just a photo app anymore, it’s a digital hangout spot.
